Last month, Netflix announced that it would not be moving forward with a fourth season of its popular Heartstopper series, based on the books by Alice Oseman. Instead of a final season, fans will be getting a feature film to wrap up the story of Charlie, Nick, and all of their friends.

In an Instagram post, Oseman said, “We are making a feature film to conclude the Heartstopper screen adaptation, based on Heartstopper Volume 6 and the Nick and Charlie novella. We are getting to tell the end of the story!!! I’m deeply relieved and so excited about this new creative venture. I’ve written the script and we’re hard at work already. I know you’ll have a lot of questions, and I’ll be able to talk about it more very soon, but for now let’s CELEBRATE! Heartstopper is getting its ending!!!!!!”

Heartstopper has had three seasons on Netflix so far. The first season covered volumes 1 and 2 of Oseman’s graphic novel series. Season two covered volume 3. Season three—the final season, which was released in October 2024—covered volumes 4 and 5, as well as the This Winter novella. Oseman has said that volume 6 will be the conclusion of the Heartstopper series, which means the upcoming feature film adaptation should wrap up the story as the author intended.

The film will pick up right where we left off with season 3 of the series. Nick and Charlie are facing conflict in their relationship as Nick prepares to leave for university. Will their love be able to withstand the distance if Nick goes to a school far from home?

Since volume 6 has not been released yet, we don’t know how the story ends quite yet! But here’s what we do know. Oseman has previously said that her goal is to get the book out before the adaptation comes out, “so people experience the end of the story from the books first.” The official release dates for both the film and the book have yet to be announced, but we can still expect to see the book before the film is released.

The cast for the upcoming Heartstopper film has not been officially announced, but we can likely to expect all of our favorites to return: Joe Locke as Charlie Spring, Kit Connor as Nick Nelson, William Gao as Tao Xu, Yasmin Finney as Elle Argent, Tobie Donovan as Isaac Henderson, Corinna Brown as Tara Jones, Kizzy Edgell as Darcy Olsson, and Jenny Wasler as Tori Spring, to name a few. Unfortunately, due to scheduling conflicts, Olivia Colman (who played Nick’s mom) was unable to return for season 3. But will she be back for the movie? Fingers crossed.

Heartstopper will be directed by Wash Westmoreland, who is taking over from season 3 director Andy Newbery. Westmoreland is probably best known for his films Still Alice and Collette. As with all three seasons of Heartstopper, Alice Oseman will pen the screenplay. Oseman will also executive produce alongside series stars Kit Connor and Joe Locke. Executive producers also include Iain Canning, Emile Sherman, Euros Lyn, and Patrick Walters.

The feature film adaptation of Heartstopper will begin filming this summer. Does that mean we should expect the book very soon? Only time will tell.
